Must see movie of the dang century (past)

There's so much praise that i could grant this movie. But i refuse to limit it's beauty by adjectives.
Instead, i implore you to go and rent it. Buy it even, it will be money well spent.
Its not for the stone hearted though. If you have a heart that beats faster to sad songs and tears that at least try to bubble up to the surface when you watch Mel Gibson die at the end of braveheart, then watch this movie. Otherwise spare it your heartless attention.
Watch it for the director's incredibly astute insight into the complexeties of human relationships and the simplicity of human choices in response to them.
Watch it for the incredibly honest portrayal of normal people caught up in a turmoil fermented by thier own inabilities.
Watch it for every frame that has been rendered with the simple puprose of drawing you into the lives on display here and holding you enthralled until the inevitable yet distressing end.
Watch it most of all for Maya. And for a love so profound that Maya herself fails to comprehend it even when she herself chose it.

Watch it for this song:

Mera kuch samaan , tumhare paas parha hai,
Sawan ke kuch bheegay bheegay din rakhay hain,
Aur mere is khat mein lipti raat parhi hai,
Woh raat bujha do,
Mera woh samman lauta do.

Patjharh mein kuch patton ki ,
Girne ki aahat,
Kaanon mein ek baar pehen ke laut aayi thi ,
Patjharh ki woh shaakh abhi tak kaanp rahi hai,
woh shaakh hila do , mera woh samman lauta do.

Ek akeli chathri mein jab ,
aadhay aadhay bheeg rahay thay ..
Aadhay sookhay, aadhe gilay , sookha to main le aayi thi ,
Gila mun shaayad , bistar ke paas parha ho,
Woh bhijwa do , mera woh samman lauta do.

Ek sau solaah , chaand ki raatein ,
aur tumharay kaandhay ka til ,
Geelee mehendi kee khooshboo aur ,
jhhoth mooth kay shikway kuch ,
jhooth mooth kay waade bhi sab yaad kara doon,
sab bhijwa do mera woh samaan lauta do,

Ek ijaazat de do bus ,
Jab isko dafnaoongi,
Main bhi wahin so jaaongi ,
Main bhi wahin so jaaongi.

Keep tissues handy.

Gulzar is one of the best lyricist ever. he brings everything to life.
:)

haven't heard this song in a long time. (or watched the movie)
when i was younger, it used to come on the radio alot, and i'd always think 'yeh kya gaana hai?'. but now while i read the lyrics, with the tune playing in my head.. it makes SO MUCH sense.

i like the 'baarish' song alot. brings back nice memories.

Ijazat was a goodmovie specially considering the time it was made.
Gulzar was at his best in 'Machis', the only almost flawless indian movie I have ever seen. If you haven't, do give it a try.

Gulzar's quite unfilmy lyrics in this song make me think... bout the music...
(i have heard the song, watched the movie and fairly aware of the tune...)
RD Burman did the composition... such brilliance in songs is just not possible today not bcoz of the abilities of today's musicians...

you simply cannot bring such excellence together again!

The speciality about Gulzar's lyrics is u need to watch the movie, feel the situation and then you can understand the lyrics better. But it is very very difficult to understand what he want to say when A. R. Rahaman and Gulzar work togather. For e.g. songs of Dil se (Dil se re...). Only thing is A R and Gulzar combination works great and u enjoy the song. U really need to stress ur head to understand it sometime. Also u need to have good command over Urdu because of lot of urdu words. But this pertucular song is fairly easy when u understand the situation.

The music of R D to this is song is simply great. In this song there is desciption of 3 different seasons or times. If u close ur eyes and listen to the music heartly, u will also flow to three different seasons. R D has filled the music in between two stanzs in such a way that u really fill like in that season. Eg. for 'Patzad' he gave different music for 'Sawan' he gave different music. I fill this is the greatest song of Hindi movie.
